Storm leaves thousands without power - Ontario

Thousands of residents in South Simcoe are without electricity after a thunderstorm passed through South Simcoe this afternoon.

Over 4,300 homes and businesses do not have electricity, many of which are concentrated in and around the Angus area.

The power went out at about 4 p.m., and is expected to be restored by about 7:15 p.m., said Hydro One representatives. The outages were caused by problems at the Alliston transformer station caused by the storm.

Power is also out at stoplights throughout the area, including County Road 10 and County Road 21 (Baxter Road). In Cookstown, motorists were facing lengthy rush hour delays with traffic backed up for kilometres from the intersection of County Road 27 and Hwy. 89. The power was restored there by about 5 p.m.

Drivers are advised to take extra caution at intersections, and treat them as a four-way stop.
